Legal aid is one element of GALA’s advocacy work.
Legal aid can be effective when focused on particular themes; for example persons incarcerated due to unpaid civil debts and victims of human trafficking who need assistance with visas to lawfully remain in the host country.
GALA has an ongoing project on prison reform in the E. Caribbean; which started with a comparison of laws related to the rights of the incarcerated throughout the region, and an assessment of the Richmond Hill prison in Grenada. Through our assessment of the prison we determined a significant number of inmates were 1) in jail on remand and awaiting a court appearance for many months and 2) without legal representation.
GALA is conducting a survey of the Richmond Hill inmates’ legal needs and then will being providing legal aid in 2017.
